Which means, of course, that I’m using an Arduino to drive the relays. Why does that matter? Because an Arduino (a small computer) uses 5v on its general purpose input/output (GPIO) pins. At 250v AC and 10A, it’ll handle far more power than my little pumps could ever draw, but the important part is that it’s activated by 5v. Since I’m controlling two pumps, I chose this 2-channel relay board from Youngneer. Thankfully, the relay is easy – it’s really just a switch, and the “internet of things” revolution has those things all over the place. It’s basically just a relay, with some sort of magic brain box to tell it when to open and close. Timers of the sort I need are pretty simple critters. Realistically, can I make one of these off-the-shelf timers work if I actually read through the instructions? Probably, but why deny myself the pleasure of building something from scratch that no one needs? Compelling components So, I need a bit more control over the programming. My strawberries need to be watered every 15 minutes or so, all day long, which is way more than 17 on/off cycles. 18 working modes and 17 on/off cycles (like 640k of memory) ought to be enough for anyone.Įxcept when it’s not. They’re all over the place, sporting a wide variety of features and…well, OK, they’re all pretty much the same thing in different packages, but that’s just how 21st century manufacturing works. Timing is everythingįinding 12v timers isn’t difficult at all. Are 12v pumps just inherently more torquey? Maybe, I have no idea. These things have a head height significantly higher than comparably priced 120v AC pumps. I went with these HuiYu 2.4 GPM pumps (which aren’t available a few months later, but this Bayite 2.1 GPM is similar). Not only are there many more available than I was expecting, but they’re surprisingly powerful for very little money. Not good for 8 foot high strawberry towers. Those 120v AC pumps can manage about 6 feet of vertical distance. Every pump has a head height, which is how much vertical distance it can move water – as if it were pumping straight upward. 12v DC isn’t going to power those 120v AC pumps I used before, and those pumps just aren’t up to the task. The generator I’m working on this time is for my strawberry tower. So, I’m making the whole thing run at 12v DC. Fourth (and most importantly), I don’t want to be done tinkering with this design yet, so while it ain’t broke, I’m gonna fix it anyway.Every one that does means dead plants, so this is literally a matter of life and death. Third, more components means more stuff that’ll break down.A timer and pump connection shouldn’t be this big. A big, boxy inverter, with a big power strip, and a couple of “how do these look identical to the ones we had in the 80’s” mechanical timers takes up a lot of room in the tote. I don’t need perfect efficiency, but I’m pretty sure I can do better than “terrible”, so it’s been irritating me for awhile. the internet not having a very good selection of 12v pumps at the time), but it’s pretty inefficient. This is a simple solution or a relatively simple problem (i.e. First, I used an inverter to convert 12v DC to 120v AC.I love my little solar generators, but they’ve got a few problems, primarily with how the load is handled: There’s something gratifying about using the sun to power the automation systems that grow plants from, well, the sun. As I detailed in this post, I enjoy running my garden on solar power. It's got its share of problems (we'll get to those later), and it's not quite as rewarding as the original, but there's a lot here into which patient gamers can sink their teeth. There's also some solid stealthy gameplay to back up all the eviscerations. However, don't take this to mean that Manhunt 2 doesn't deserve its M rating: There's plenty of gore, sex, and adult language to go around. It's visually less grisly than the original Manhunt: The much-ballyhooed blurring added to the most extreme acts often makes it difficult to see exactly what bloodthirsty rages you're subjecting your victims to-particularly in the Wii version. Like its predecessor, it depicts its share of grisly murders, gruesome decapitations, and a few swift kicks to the genitals for good measure. * The story isn't very scary or foreboding.Ī lot has been made about Manhunt 2's supposedly ultraviolent content. * Loose gunplay isn't as tight or as satisfying as the sneaking * In most of the executions, you can't really see what's going on * Gritty visual design sets just the right tone of anxiety and dread. * Execution moves serve as a grisly reward for a job well done * Compelling stealth mechanics that require real skill Kevin VanOrd disembowels Manhunt 2 in this video review. It's not as shocking as you'd expect, but Manhunt 2 still satisfies your primal instincts. Unfortunately, hiding in the shadows is no longer a sure way to safety, and gamers may find themselves engaging in a quick mini-game in order to avoid detection if enemies catch them moving around in the darkness. As in the previous release, gamers can follow targets silently and activate more impressive kill animations by waiting for the cursor to turn from white to red. Players learn how to move and kill while escaping from the asylum. Gamers lead Daniel through several different locations to discover his previous life while sneaking past enemies and using objects in the environment to defeat any aggressors. After an electrical storm knocks the power out at the asylum and the prisoners take control, Daniel leaves the institution to uncover the mysteries of his past and why he can't remember anything about himself. Six years later, Daniel still shares his space with the criminally insane and wonders if his previous life existed at all. Unfortunately for Daniel, the experiments on his body go wrong and he is sent to spend the rest of his life in Dixmore Asylum. To keep his well-paying job and satisfy the needs of his wife and two children, Daniel becomes a guinea pig for underground research after the funding is pulled for Project Pickman. Featuring several gameplay upgrades and an all-new story, Manhunt 2 is the tale of a young doctor named Daniel Lam.An onscreen radar means that you'll always be able to tell where your enemies are, so you won't have to rely on hearing them coming. You'll miss out on most of the incidental dialogue, but get the story delivered in subtitles. If you're a fan of the first, it's worth a try, but be forewarned, there's nothing as good as the Piggsy fight to be found anywhere on the disc.ĭeaf and Hard of Hearing gamers should be okay. There's a much wider variety of kills, but none of them are actually visible. The story is a great improvement over the first, but the voice acting is a small step down. Parents, are you seriously considering buying this for your children under the age of 17? Seriously? You know that this is the sequel to the only PS2/Xbox game to feature full frontal male nudity, right? And that it's themed around dangerous brain surgery that turns regular people into psychopathic killers? And that the game moves to such memorable locales as a snuff club, porno theatre, and adult video store? And if all that hasn't dissuaded you from buying this for your children, feel free to call your local police department and turn yourself in for child endangerment right now.įans of the first Manhunt will find this game the ultimate mixed bag. This also means that every now and then something comes up that is not explained, simply because it's part of the scenery and not part of the plot. Even though I never managed to "get into" it, I still noticed the obvious attention that was payed to the every scenery, location, costume and just the overall detail. So what is good? Well, all of the above may just be a way for the director to allow you to focus on and enjoy the atmosphere of the show. Lastly, the plot takes way to long to develop. Another annoyance was that I couldn't identify with any of the characters, which seemed emotionless, Masked soldiers, young girl with powers, weirdo green liquid, brooding hero-type, they were all unable to surprise me. I'll not go into details to avoid spoilers, but let's just say that everything in the plot basically ended up doing what I thought it was doing. If, on the other hand, you've seen a lot of this sort of stuff, this series will inevitably seem somewhat predictable. Those less familiar with the gothic/horror/scifi crossover genre might enjoy this series a lot more, at least 1 or 2 points more, than I did. Overall, it was an unforgettable show for me that I both enjoyed and basked watching hours at a time. The art and sound in this show are very, very good, sporting a soundtrack by the same person who did the music for Rurouni Kenshin. I found all of the other characters we met with just as comprehensive a background. Robin is not the only highly characterized individual in the show, however. As simple as she may seem on the outside, her personality and emotions unravel and become apparent later on in the series, and it does not disappoint. Robin is one of those characters that, in my opinion, stays with you long after you forget everything else about the series. Even some of these STNJ members are witches themselves, including the protagonist Robin. the STNJ, a 'secretive' detective agency (ala Men in Black) that hunts down abusive witches, individuals with various sorts of powers. Starting like any normal 'monster-of-the-week' series, you are compelled into the daily investigations of While the story and plot is slow (sometimes tremendously), the overall plotline and conclusion to the anime makes you really see the epic and vast nature of just what was being approached with this series. While some people might not appreciate or enjoy the genre or story, either after the fact or at first glance, I believe that anyone who loves intellectually grasping stories and characterization should at least try out the first few episodes of Witch Hunter Robin. Witch Hunter Robin is one of those shows that draws you in unconditionally. There's even some romance development, which is just enough to keep you hoping for something more. Robin's motives and actions are appropriate for her personality, and we see her change throughout the show as different things are presented before her.Īll in all, I really enjoyed this series. The relationship that grows between Robin and her work colleagues is well drawn out. I could not have asked for a more perfect soundtrack. All the other background music throughout the show fits in wonderfully too. Most of the series is shot in a dark environment, so be prepared to possibly turn up your screen/video gamma or you might miss a thing or two.īy far the biggest plus for WHR is its music score. The trials she goes through in order to achieve these hidden secrets are quite entertaining. You'll follow Robin as she finds out more and more secrets about the witch hunting organization she works for. It's not a boss of the week show, and it's not a mindless action flick. The story behind this show really draws you forward throughout each episode. I won't go into details, but craft users hunt the witch users. Though technically, Robin is no witch, but actually a "craft" user. “Take that, Eggface!” Sonic yelled, performing a Homing Attack on Ravager Bot so Violetta could cut in immediately afterwards with a savage swing to the shin, cutting it off.Witch Hunter Robin (WHR) is a dark, mysterious Anime centering around Robin Sena, a witch. She noticed Sonic’s tentativeness with the choice of scenery for the fight, right next to a deep frozen lake. And to make it worse, it was cracked, and water was almost flowing over the surface. The handicapped robot made a whirring noise, a yellow laser rocketing from a blaster and connecting with Sonic’s chest when he was off guard, blasting him backwards and into the water, under which he submerged with a scream. “Sonic!” Violetta yelled, going to race after her friend. Since it was a super expensive purchase I won't be getting Divine Shooter for a few months unless it get's a great sale. I am so looking forward to receiving the figure that introduced me to Transformers collecting but shipping may take a while as it's coming from Hong Kong (ugh). This is my first time purchasing from RoboToyBase but I saw some positive words for the site on another TFW board and it seems to be ran by someone pretty trusted in the community. I just recently found Thunder Manus + Divine Suit Boxset on RoboToyBase for almost double original price (if including their expensive shipping). The accessories are totally cool too and you can get a Tarn vibe with all the cannons combined. I would've liked the crazy possibility like Striker Manus but it's defiantly no Buster Skywing. I just recently bought a used Rioter Despotron on Ebay (the seller said it was initially bought from TFSource, which I believe because it poses like a champ) and it is pretty spectacular. It's a shame but Premium Striker Manus came out of the box with a few loose joints so the combined mode is a trainwreck. Evern through Skywing's flaws it looked great on the shelf next to Premium Manus. He isn't bad by any stretch but he lacked the great things Striker Manus had. This was a representation of my favorite G1 character, skyfire, but the figure turned out to be pretty mediocre. I got into the line way after it started so getting my hands on the figures is tough and I try my hardest to avoid KOs.Ī few months later I bought Buster Skywing. I just got into Gundam at the time so the Japanese robot aesthetic was amazing (and the unbuilt accessories on runners was no problem). This figure truly is amazing and the possibility and accessories blew me away. While looking for it I stumbled across the rest of the Cross Dimensions line and ordered the Striker Manus Premium figure. I started collecting a year after the Thunder Manus mold came out and it was sold out everywhere I looked. I would've appreciated this figure in a CHUG collection but could never get my hands on it. After selling off most of my CHUG collection I remembered what originally got me into Transformers collecting this was JobbyTheHong's Maketoys Thunder Erebus review. I started initially collecting CHUG but was dissatisfied with Hasbro and Takara's representation of the characters I loved. Navigationally speaking, OmniWeb takes full advantage of key/click combinations. Actually, as one would expect, there is a stop button, but in OmniWeb, the load icon does double duty, acting as the stop mechanism when pages are being downloaded. The remainder of the browser's front-end interface stays in line with the standard interface of other applications, although one might notice the lack of a stop button on the toolbar. Basically, the bottom field indicates the current page (and doubles as a progress meter when content is being loaded) while the top field represents selected URLs - users can choose locations through a number of different ways including: navigating links via the keyboard's arrow keys, selecting and then editing a link via a right-mouse click, or by dragging in URLs. Omni feels that it's important to always have the user knowing where they're at and where they want to go, and judging by this explanation, we more or less agree with them.Īlthough a potentially confusing issue for new users, power users will love the capabilities provided by this feature. Differing from every other Web browser in history (at least to our knowledge), OmniWeb actually has two URL fields at the top of the window. Glancing beyond the Apple homepage, a look at the browser's user interface will certainly raise some eyebrows (and no, we're not talking about the OpenStep reversed scroll bars). Obviously, the heart and sole of any Web browser is the actual browsing window and this is where we'd like to begin our look at OmniWeb, partly because of the program's sometimes radical approach to surfing. We here at Webintosh wanted to get Macintosh users familiar with some OpenStep products which are destined for Rhapsody, and for many, this inside look at OmniWeb will be their first chance to see what OpenStep applications actually look like. One such firm is Seattle-based Omni Development, makers of the popular OpenStep Web browser, OmniWeb. While it's a given that not every OpenStep developer will decide to make the incremental jump to Rhapsody (although faced with the fact that many software companies had their business' revolving entirely around OpenStep, we believe the migration percentage will be extremely large), several notable companies in the current crop have already pledged their support. Like the actual OS, there is a relatively large base of OpenStep applications available that have been through years of maturation which will lead to products for Rhapsody that don't feel like '1.0' applications, even though people will perceive them as such. Revolutionary products are what will largely determine the success of Apple's mammoth endeavour and the importance of having a group of developers who are already experienced with developing for OpenStep (and are in fact shipping products) can't be stressed enough. This is vitally important, if only for the sole fact that Rhapsody won't sing its song on either Intel or PowerPC without the aid of dozens of premiere applications. But along with the expectations of receiving a world-class, battle tested, cutting-edge product, Apple gained something that has gone largely unnoticed thus far - a committed pool of seeded NeXT developers who have been building what Steve Jobs likes to call 'best of breed' applications over the past five years. When Apple Computer made the decision to purchase NeXT in late December of last year, their obvious intentions for the acquisition were to jump start their ailing operating system division via the OpenStep environment. |
